Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does a Cycle Take to Process?

The average TE-5000 cycle takes 2.5 to 3 hours to process. It takes about 20-30 minutes for the cycle to heat up, reaching above 350° F (the point of sterilization). That temperature is held for 90 minutes, and then the unit begins to cool down until it reaches 100° F.

What is Happening to The Waste During The Cycle? Is it All Melting Down?
The main purpose of the TE-5000 is to completely sterilize your infectious sharps and red bag waste. Depending on the type of plastic used in your medical waste materials, the melting point could be between 220° F to almost 500° F. Additionally, most metals have a melting point of over 2500° F!
Cool science facts aside, our unit is generally heating to 380° F and just above, which is the temperature needed to render the waste non-infectious(this is why some plastics may melt, and others may keep their “form”).
The safety around throwing the items away comes from two parts: the waste being sterilized and no longer infectious, and the container itself (with the locking lid in place). All materials are enclosed in the tin, puncture proof container, making it safe to dispose of in the regular trash.

What Type of Waste Can Go Into The TE-5000?

The TE-5000 is designed to compliantly treat your sharps and red bag medical waste items. This includes syringes, razors, saturated gauze, wound dressings, etc. Pharmaceutical and pathological waste is not able to be processed in the TE-5000. OnSite has separate services dedicated to these waste streams.
